| CHALLANS |
 |
... AND ITS DISTRICT
 |
 |
For
many tourists - and who can blame them -
the Vendée region is first and foremost
a sunny beach where one arrives on a sunny
summer's morning, with one's mind made up
to profit to the maximum from the holidays.
|
| What
does is matter that is beach is in Vendée?
And yet, the Vendée region is more
than that. |
|
|
That
is why this guide has been produced to help all
those unknown friends who give us the pleasure
of coming to our region,
to
discover many other riches whose
existence they cannot even imagine.
|
|
|
We
doesn't have to go far back in time to find in
the daily behaviour of the "Maraîchin"
(inhabitant of the Marshes), customs and habits
which are completely significant to its individuality.
Nevertheless, this region participates in the
harmony of the whole, as if the Bocage could not
do without the Marsh area, which in turn, would
not be so charming if it didn't converge on the
Ocean from which it is born, and which still dominates
it. The district of Challans is comprised of six
towns (small territorial divisions) whose charm
and quality of life you will discover little by
little.

With
almost 19 000 inhabitants, Challans is the second largest
town of the county. Very powerful in north-west Vendee,
Challans' dynamism is no more a secret as shown by much
entertainment, 220 businesses in town, supermarkets,
and three markets per week (Tuesday, Friday and Saturday
morning).
Challans is an industrial town by tradition but its
tertiary activities are rapidly developing- with more
than 100 business with 10 employees or more (working
in different areas such as wood, furniture, nautical,
farming,
)
Even if it might not appear so, the town has a strong
and old history to discover.
- Wash-house
of the "Guy"
- Coudrie's
old church
- La
Verie castle
(no visit)
- The
church and its
separated bell.
- Campsite**
- Wood

and a leisure resort as you wish for relaxation, ramble
