Within the confines of Vendee and Loire Atlantique, La Garnache, the second municipality of the district, offers to nature lovers the calm of the 'Bocage Vendeen' near the sea.
On 14th March 1793, the knight Francois Athanase Charrette was staying in his property of Fontclose (no visit) when peasants who revolted against the Paris government decisions came and took him as their leader. It was the beginning of a 3 years' battle. Captured by 'Hoche', he was shot on 29th March 1796 at Viarme in Nantes.
