Sallertaine is an island in the marshes. Built on a calcareous islet, Sallertaine is a town of old foundation. Its name would apparently be a souvenir of the salty marshes, which were formerly surrounding. It looks down on marshes, a vast stretch furrowed by canals. The 12th century church typical of the architectural patrimony of the Northwest Vendee, forms a wonder of the Angelic Roman art and bears witness of the interest of this place. Sallertaine also inspired many writers, including Rene Bazin 'La Terre qui meurt' (The Dying Land) novel décor. Indeed, the "Lumineau" tragedy happened in Mauny.
- The 12th century Roman church
- The wind-mill
- La Bourine a Rosalie (typical marshes' house)
- L'île aux artisans (Craftsmen island)
- La Route Du Sel (The salt road): ramble, hiking and canoe to hire inside marshes.
- By foot or canoe to discover a vast soil, a mix of land and water, marshes are fragile as much as rich. You must see it by using the "charrauds", very small roads inside marshes.
